Kwathu Drama Group back with new play
Kwathu Drama Group is back with a new play titled Mulhakho ‘Na Mphatizano’.
This is the group’s second production this year which follows ‘Chaulere’ launched early this year.
Kwathu Drama Group’s Director Eric Mabedi said yesterday that all was set for the launch of the play next month.
The drama group, which is one of the oldest in the country, will premiere the play at Mulanje View Motel on July 2 before invading Blantyre Cultural Centre on Independence Day.
“We are ready with this play and we are excited as a group,” Mabedi, popularly known as Jakobo, said.
Mulhakho Na Mphatizano, was written by Mabedi, who also wrote ‘Chaulere’.
Mabedi said the play focuses on the abuse that women face through marriage and cultural beliefs.
The story focuses on Mvahiwa from the the Lhomwe belt of Thyolo, who is working in South Africa.
Whilest in South Africa, Mvahiwa sends a message to his relations to find a good wife for him. They find Ntchayi Ntonyo from Shire Valley where the culture of kulowola is followed when it comes to marriage.
Mvahiwa’s relations do everything and they later took Tchayi to Thyolo awaiting Mvahiwa to come back from the rainbow nation.
Five years elapsed without Mvahiwa coming to take his wife and thereafter so many things happen.
“Later, Ntchayi is found to be pregnant and this makes Mvahiwa’s relations very angry. The question that comes up is that should Ntchayi’s relations refund the money that they paid five years ago? There is a lot in the story but let me not pre-empt it,” he said.
The play will also be staged at Mwanza Hotel on July 8 and Akulenje Hall in Lilongwe on July 9.
Kwathu Drama Group warmed up for the launch staging ‘Chaulere’ on Monday during the launch of the K5 million Superior Drama competition.
