Kwathu Drama Group tackles harmful traditional practices in new play
Kwathu Drama Group on Sunday tackled harmful traditional practices in their new play Mulhakho na Mphatikino at Mulanje View Motel.
The play highlighted the consequences of arranged marriages on young girls as well as gender-based violence against women which goes unreported.
The play centred on a girl who got married to a man arranged by her family because of the man’s worthy status.
As per tradition, the girl moved from her home in Nsanje and stayed with the husband’s family. Instead of being a wife, the girl was just a house maid who was not allowed to their compound because they paid the bride price.
The husband, who was working in South Africa, was just promising her that he would come to Malawi but never showed up.
The play features Erick Mabedi, Bon Kalindo, Linda Chatha, Evance Mbewe and Enifa Chiwaya.
Kwathu Drama Group is set to perform the play at Blantyre Cultural Centre this Thursday, on Saturday at Mwanza Motel and lastly in Lilongwe on Sunday at Akulenji Inn Hall as part of Independence Day celebration.
