Last chance in trade test, Malawi craft examinations
The Malawi National Examinations Board (Maneb), administrators of Malawi Craft and Malawi Advance Craft examinations, and Ministry of Labour, administrators of trade test examinations, have announced that the very last tests under the two technical examinations will be administered in 2019.
The announcement is in line with merging of Trade Testing system, the Maneb craft system and the old Technical, Entrepreneurial and Vocational Education and Training Authority (Teveta) system of assessment into a unified system.
Harmonisation entails that the delivery of content will be using one curricular and the assessment and certification processes shall be done by a unified body in the Technical, Entrepreneurial and Vocational Education and Training (Tevet) sector.
Assistant Labour Commissioner responsible for Trade Test, Joseph Chirombo, said during a press briefing in Lilongwe yesterday that students enrolled for level one in colleges in January 2017 shall not be allowed to sit for Trade Test examinations in the March to April 2017 series.
According to Chirombo, the students shall be assessed in December 2017 using the unified system of assessment.
He said all continuing students shall be assessed and certified until they exist in the Trade Test qualification ladder.
“It is expected that the last Trade Test examinations shall be administered in November/December 2019. External candidates (who used to benefit from the Trade Testing System) shall be reached through Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) system to verify their levels of competency and enable them access a full technical qualification,” Chirombo said.
Maneb Director of Examinations, Gerson Phiri, said Maneb has informed colleges about the changes and how it will administer the last series of both Craft certificate examinations as well as the Advanced Craft Certificate.
Phiri said craft certificate examinations will be administered during the 2017 March to April series and 2018 March to April series while Advanced Craft Certificate examinations will be administered in 2017 November to December series, 2018 November to December series and 2019 November to December series.
