Former Malawi national football team striker Lawrence Waya has been recalled to the Flames coaching panel to help drill strikers.
Coach Meck Mwase announced the development during a press briefing at Mpira Village in Chiwembe Township, Blantyre Thursday.
Mwase also disclosed that Nyasa Big Bullets Physical Fitness trainer, Majaha Ndhlovu, had joined the technical panel. “We asked our superiors to consider drafting the two into our team and we have been assisted. If funds permit, we will also be travelling with them,” he said.
Flames strikers have been struggling to convert scoring chances and Waya is expected to help solve the problem.
The former Bullets legendary forward was first engaged by former Flames Belgian mentor Ronny van Geneugden.
During the briefing, Mwase also announced a 31-member locally-based squad to start full-time camping on Monday ahead of the friendly against Zambia slated for March 11 in Lusaka.
Malawi will use the match to prepare for two back-to-back 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Burkina Faso.
In the squad, Mwase has drafted in four players who joined non-residential camping late about two weeks ago.
The quartet includes Mphatso Magaleta (Ntopwa), Nickson Mwase (Civo), Eric Kaonga (Mlatho Mponela) and Paul Ndhlovu (Mafco).
Malawi will travel to Ouagadougou to face the Stallions on March 26 before hosting Burkina Faso four days later. Mwase said foreign land-based players would join the squad after the Flames’ return from Zambia.
“We hope things will work according to our plans. The Zambia match will prepare local players who will be joined by their foreign colleagues after 11 March. It is a difficult task to manage the players for back-to-back games but we will handle the situation carefully so that they don’t suffer from burnout,” he said.
