Reported by Wezzie Gausi:
A lawyer representing Stuart Kalungama, who is accused of defiling his nine-year-old stepdaughter, has dumped him, a development that has forced Lilongwe Chief Resident Magistrate Patrick Chirwa to give Kalungama seven days to find another lawyer.
During the last hearing, the lawyer, Edward Chagalamuka, had asked Chirwa to recuse himself but the request was shot down.
When hearing of the case resumed Tuesday, Chirwa allowed Kalungama to find new legal representation.
President of Women Lawyers Association Emmaculate Maluza, who is also representing the State in the case, welcomed the court’s determination.
“As the State, we will wait until the accused person finds a new lawyer. Every person has the right to legal representation; hence, the court has given Kalungama time to find new legal representation,” Maluza said.
Kalungama, a Lilongwe-based businessman, was arrested early this year on allegations that he had defiled his stepdaughter he was living with.
