Lazarus Chakwera appoints new Attorney General


President Lazarus Chakwera has appointed lawyer Thabo Chakaka Nyirenda as the country’s new Attorney General.
This is according to a statement released by Secretary to the President and Cabinet, Zanga-zanga Chikhosi.
“In exercise of powers conferred upon him by section 98(3) of the Constitution of the Republic of Malawi His excellency the President has appointed Mr Thabo Chakaka Nyirenda as Attorney General. The appointment is with effect from today, 27th August,2021,” reads Chikhosi’s statement.
When contacted separately, Nyirenda confirmed his appointment with Malawi News.
“I can confirm my appointment…I am looking forward to the challenge and serving my country,” he said.
He has replaced Chikosa Silungwe who was fired about a month ago.
Human rights defenders coalition chairperson Gift Trapence said the appointment is also an inspiration to younger generation that professionalism sees no age.
“HRDC commends the President for filling this important Government position. It needed to be filled as far as good governance and constitutionalism is concerned. As a person there isn’t much known about him but as a nation, there are high expectations from him as the new Attorney General” Trapence Said
Until his appointment, Nyirenda worked for the Reserve Bank of Malawi as Ethics and Compliance Manager.
He holds a Bachelor of Laws (Honours) Degree from Chancellor College (now University of Malawi), LLM in International Financial Law, University of Sussex, United Kingdom.
He boasts 15 years experience at the bar.
He has also been Silver Strikers legal advisor for more than 10 years.
