By Wezzie Gausi:

President Lazarus Chakwera Wednesday announced the appointment of new board of directors for 67 parastatal organisations whose composition is largely of professionals in the field they have been appointed.

The office of Secretary to the President and Cabinet made the announcement in a press release dated September 23.

In July this year Chakwera dissolved the board of directors in all parastatal organisations, a move critics said was a step to clean the rubble in the parastatals.

The members of the new boards have been drawn, mostly, from the experienced former civil servants, private sector and the academia.

The President has appointed Chokani Mhango as chairperson of Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi board, Leonard Chikadya has been appointed chairperson of Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority board, Reverend Vasco Kachipapa has been appointed Malawi Broadcasting Corporation board chairperson while Dr Stanley Khaila has been appointed chairperson of Malawi Communication Regulatory Authority.

The press release, signed by Secretary to the Office Of President and Cabinet Zanga Zanga Chikhosi, also indicated that the President has appointed Dr Jack Wirima as chairperson of University of Malawi board, former Principal Secretary Kester Kaphaizi as chairperson of Road Fund Administration board chairperson while Kusamba Dzonzi has been appointed board chairperson of Admarc board.

Other notable faces in the boards, in various positions, include Dr Sunduzwayo Madise, Dr Henry Chingaipe, Boniface Dulani, Justine Dzonzi, John Gift Mwankhwawa, Dr Sosten Chiotha and Dr Mwapatsa Mipando.

Minister of Information, Gospel Kazako, said the president has appointed the right people on the board that agree to Tonse administration agendas.

“As an alliance government, we want to have people that agree to Tonse administration agendas. This time around we are not going to give positions on appeasement but rather we are looking at qualifications and experience among others,” Kazako said.

The Minister further said the list of the people has to be cross-checked by technocrats before the final release.

In an earlier interview, law expert Sunduzwayo Madise said the boards are crucial to run parastatal affairs in the country.

“It is the boards that make and approve most decisions in institutions. For example, the boards are the ones who make policy level decisions and operational decisions which also follow decisions made by the boards.

“Appointment of senior officers, review of remunerations, debt and loans cross checking are also some of the decisions by the boards,” Madise said.
