Lazarus Chakwera appoints three more advisors

President Lazarus Chakwera has appointed Malawi Congress Party’s Director of Campaign Moses Kunkuyu as Special Advisor on Chiefs and Rural Governance.

Chakwera has also appointed former Lilongwe North East legislator Maxwell Thyolera as Presidential Advisor on Parliamentary Affairs while People’s Party Vice President for the South Ephraim Chibvunde is Presidential Advisor on Political Affairs.

Kunkuyu confirmed the appointment but said the official communication will come from State House.

Kunkuyu’s appointment comes at a time the Tonse Alliance government appears to be trying to mend relationships with traditional leaders some of whom claim to have been victims of political persecution.

Last week, Chakwera reinstated Senior Chief Ngabu of Chikwawa who was fired by former president Peter Mutharika.

Kunkuyu said he will be working hand in hand with the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development to bring chiefs closer to Chakwera’s development agenda.

Since the June 23 fresh presidential election, Kunkuyu has been meeting chiefs in his capacity as MCP Director of Campaign, appraising them on the Tonse Alliance development agenda.

Thyolera also confirmed his appointment but referred The Daily Times to State House for details.

“I am thankful to the President for the appointment and will do my level best to assist him and the nation at large in my capacity as Presidential Advisor on Parliamentary Affairs,” the former lawmaker said.

Chibvunde on the other hand did not pick his mobile phone on several attempts.

Social and political commentator Makhumbo Munthali called for caution on the appointment of presidential advisors, saying for a long time their contribution has been questionable.

“I think we need to revisit the role of presidential advisors in the country to avoid duplicating their roles with some of the ministries around because where there is a line ministry, then the role of the minister is being advisor to the President,” he said.

Chakwera also appointed Malawi Confederation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry Chief Executive Officer Chancellor Kaferapanjira as Chief Economic Advisor, Samson Lembani as Chief Advisor on Public Policy and Governance and Collen Zamba as Chief Advisor on Sustainable Development Goals International Relations.

The President also appointed Chris Chaima Banda as Chief Advisor on Strategy and Manifesto Implementation and Lucius Banda as Advisor on Youth and Arts.
