Lazarus Chakwera dares faith bodies in graft fight

Lazarus Chakwera

President Lazarus Chakwera Thursday challenged faith bodies to play a leading role in fighting corruption in the country.

Chakwera was speaking in Lilongwe when he presided over the ground-breaking ceremony of the five-storey headquarters of the Assemblies of God church.

The Malawi leader said faith bodies could lead in the crusade against corruption by practising values of their faith at home, work and whenever seeking government services.

He said if every church-going Malawian refused to cut corners or take or pay bribes, Malawi would have the cleanest government on earth and live up to its aspiration to be a God-fearing country.

Chakwera, who once served as Assemblies of God Malawi president before joining politics, also appealed to faith bodies to exercise their constitutional right to enjoy the freedom of worship and conscience without harassing others who do not share their convictions on moral and social issues.

He further appealed to religious bodies to enjoy their freedom without harassing others, saying practising one’s faith is not a licence for depriving others of their freedom.

“I would like to congratulate the Malawi Assemblies of God for designing a fit-for-mission national headquarters, which will add aesthetic beauty to the capital and contribute to Malawi 2063 vision of quality infrastructure development as a key enabler for transformation,” Chakwera said.

He pledged Capital Hill’s commitment to supporting faith bodies with policies and incentives that would enable them to continue being a perfect partner for the government in the course of serving Malawians.

In his homily themed ‘Time to Build’, Malawi Assemblies of God President Bishop Andrew Dube said the church had been in Malawi for over 70 years without a proper home and that time had come to build a proper headquarters for the institution.

Dube further said time had come for Malawi to build quality infrastructure from Chitipa to Nsanje districts.
