President Lazarus Chakwera led Malawians in mobilising resources for war veterans when he participated in an Annual Military fundraising golf tournament at Lilongwe Golf Club Sunday.
Chakwera, who teed off the competition in the morning, said the war veterans deserve special support.
“The war veterans sacrificed their lives. We need to support them. Let’s go beyond participation in the golf tournament and do something for the war veterans. Well done to everyone who contributed something to the cause,” Chakwera said.
Vice President Saulos Chilima also participated in the golf tournament and braved the scorching heat to complete the 18 hole golf course.
MDF Deputy Commander Lieutenant General Paul Phiri hailed Chakwera for gracing the event saying his presence was testimony that he wanted to improve the welfare of the war veterans.
“The war veterans lack basic needs; so, we need to support them. The money realised through the golf tournament will be used for its intended purpose. This will help us improve the welfare of war veterans,” he added.
NBS Bank, who co-sponsored the event with MDF, also contributed K10 million towards the war veterans.
The bank’s board chairperson Vizenge Kumwenda said the bank was committed to improve the welfare of the war veterans.
