President Lazarus Chakwera left the country Tuesday to Belgium where he will attend the European Union-African Union summit.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the President’s participation has been funded by “Malawi’s partners”.

Speaking before his departure at Kamuzu International Airport, Chakwera said the trip was important on two counts. First, he said, the summit will reflect on Africa and EU relations.

“And then, I have other engagements to do with agriculture industry in this country, meeting with buyers of tobacco and we believe that these interactions will be of great benefit to the country,” he said.

The President is also expected to lobby for support towards relief efforts to mitigate the effects of Tropical Storm Ana.

The summit will be held from February 17 to 18 2022. Thereafter, Chakwera is expected to proceed to Geneva in Switzerland.
