By Deogratias Mmana:

President Lazarus Chakwera has hailed his Mozambican counterpart Filipe Nyusi for promoting cordial bilateral ties with Malawi.

“When President Nyusi said to me in Songo province eighteen months ago that he was determined to strengthen the cooperation between our two nations, he meant business.

“For this reason, I am always assured that anything I want to do to show that I mean business will find a warm reception in Malawi’s partnership with Mozambique under President Nyusi’s able leadership,” Chakwera said during a State banquet Nyusi hosted for him in Maputo on Thursday.

Chakwera said Nyusi has proven to be Malawi’s true partner and neighbor and that it was good that he took over the chairmanship of the Southern African Development Community from him.

“And on a personal note, I must say that I have found your friendship and camaraderie a great comfort on this trip following the recent passing of my sister, and I want you to know that my heart’s gratitude to you and all Mozambicans for this kindness knowns no bounds,” he said.

According to the programme of events, some of the activities lined up for Chakwera included visiting Heroes monument, the Maputo Municipality offices, the Mozambican Parliament, addressing the Mozambique- Malawi Business Forum and signing of three bilateral agreements between Malawi and Mozambique.

Earlier in the day before the banquet, Chakwera and Nyusi jointly launched the Mozambican side of the Mozambique –Malawi Interconnection Project in Marawa district. The two also had a joint tour of the Port of Nacala.

While Mozambique has completed the construction of his side of the Mozambique-Malawi Interconnection Project, the Malawi side is embroiled in controversy surrounding the choice of the contractor.

Chakwera left the country on Thursday and is expected to return Sunday.
