President Lazarus Chakwera Wednesday described the late Roseby Dinala as one of the custodians of Malawi Congress Party’s (MCP) history. She died in Blantyre on Tuesday and was laid to rest Wednesday.

Popularly known as Mayi Dinala, the fallen lady was one of MCP’s longest serving members.

Speaking at Dinala’s funeral ceremony, Chakwera said MCP has the richest history in as far as political parties in Malawi are concerned.

“Some political parties have started and gone but the Malawi Congress Party stands. Mayi Dinala here was one of the custodians of the party’s rich history. Her passing is devastating to the family, to the party and to the nation,” Chakwera said.

The President added that although there might have been incidences which could have frustrated her within the party, Dinala remained loyal.

“Although Mayi Dinala’s contemporaries in the party were given houses, she was not. She did not know how this happened but she was never disgruntled.

She said several times that she would die MCP and true to her word, she has died MCP,” he said.

In his sermon, Moderator of Saint Columbus CCAP, where she was congregating, Reverend Reynold Mmangisa, concurred with Chakwera that Dinala was consistent in many things of her life.

Mmangisa said the same loyalty Dinala exhibited to the Party is what kept her faithful towards the work of God.

Dinala died at Blantyre Adventist Hospital after a short illness. She was aged 82.

In her youthful years, in 1958, Dinala was among Malawians who welcomed Hastings Kamuzu Banda at Chileka International Airport from the United Kingdom.

Dinala, who hailed from Mbulumbuzi in Chiradzulu, had 13 children in total but six passed away. She is therefore survived by seven children and grandchildren.

Cabinet Ministers, senior government officials and former government official hostess Tamanda Kadzamira attended the funeral ceremony.
