ZAMBA—We will be able to have coordination and we will be able to save a lot of money

President Lazarus Chakwera wants every Malawian to have a national identity (ID) card to facilitate the provision of improved service delivery in government systems.

He said digitalisation of the national ID card makes service provision easy.

The President made the remarks at Capital Hill yesterday morning, when he went to work and met with officials from government ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs).

Chakwera also asked MDAs to work together, describing coordination as one of the fruits of digitalisation.

The Malawi leader said digitalisation was crucial to national development as it helps every individual who holds a national ID get connected to MDAs services, most of which are crucial to individuals as well as public and private sector players.

“National registration should be on-going and cards need to be renewed for those that need that because we want quality service delivery,” Chakwera said.

Head of the Presidential Delivery Unit Colleen Zamba said, since the launch of the digitalisation programme last year, there had been challenges that the digitalisation laboratory would be working to address in the next 14 days.

Zamba said the national registration card is crucial as it gives one legal identity.

“It is a cornerstone whereby, if there is that linkage among different management systems, we will be able to have coordination and we will be able to save a lot of money,” she said.

Whenever he has the opportunity on Tuesday, Chakwera works at Capital Hill.
