Lazarus Chakwera honours Sadc soldiers
President Lazarus Chakwera has paid tribute to soldiers deployed to combat terrorism and acts of violence in the northern Mozambican province of Cabo Delgado as part of the Southern African Development Community (Sadc) Mission in Mozambique.
In a statement to mark the commemoration of Southern Africa Liberation Day Wednesday, Chakwera, who is also Sadc Chairperson, echoed the region’s sympathies with families of personnel of the mission who have “either lost their lives or have been injured in service for the region”.
Every year, Sadc countries remember the priceless sacrifice of the generation of men and women who fought for the liberation of countries in the region.
The day was endorsed at the meeting of Sadc Heads of State and Government in Windhoek, Namibia, in August 2018 as one way of preserving the history and institutional memory of the regional block.
According to information made available to us, the day also signifies an end, in 1988, of one of the fiercest conventional battles of the liberation struggle fought at Cuito Cuanavale in Angola, where armed forces of the apartheid regime of South Africa were defeated by combined forces of the People’s Armed Forces for the Liberation of Angola.
“Through the commemoration of Liberation Day, we recognise the great contribution and sacrifices made by the founders of Sadc to bring about political freedom thereby laying a solid foundation for regional integration, cooperation a n d socio-economic development,” Chakwera says in the statement.
He then announces that the history of Southern Africa’s liberation struggles from “our own perspectives” will, under the Hashim Mbita publications be available from March 31 this year.
