Lazarus Chakwera in Doha for LDCs conference

President Lazarus Chakwera is in Doha, Qatar, for the fifth United Nations Conference for Least Developed Countries (LDCs) to be held beginning tomorrow, March 4 2023.

On his departure at Kamuzu International Airport Thursday Chakwera said the meeting is important as it will serve as a platform where they will discuss issues related to socio-economic progress.

He expressed optimism that Malawi’s leadership has made an impact to operations of the group.

“I want to take the example of those who have graduated from the Least Developed Nations. As we hand over the leadership and, looking at several things, we hope that Malawi’s leadership over these years has contributed towards achievements,” he said.

Malawi assumed the Chairpersonship of the LDCs in 2018.

United Nations agencies are part of this important meeting and will have a chance to share notes with member States on progress made this far for the LDCs to have a self-sustained status.

Chakwera is expected to deliver opening remarks during the official opening of the conference as Chairperson for the LDCs alongside the United Nations Secretary General.

The last UN conference for LDCs was held in New York, United States of America in 2022.
