Presidential Press Secretary Anthony Kasunda said Tuesday that President Lazarus Chakwera’s meeting with United Kingdom based comedian Daliso Chaponda on Monday demonstrates his passion and love for the creative sector.
Kasunda said Chakwera believes that the country is full of artistic talent around and that the creative industry needs to be developed.
“The President is passionate about developing the creative sector with major investment and his meeting with Daliso Chaponda demonstrates his openness to freedom of artistic expression, and his support for all Malawians, who are making Malawian art and creativity attractive and marketable to the world,” he said.
With the creative sector bemoaning lack of support and being sidelined as observed with the absence of National Arts and Heritage Council (Nahec) whose bill is yet to be enacted, Chakwera has shown his love for arts and apart from Daliso, he has also interacted with other artists including old-timer Giddes Chalamanda.
Daliso met Chakwera fresh from holding a performance at Bingu International Convention Centre (BICC) in Lilongwe where he shared the stage with British comedian Imran Yusuf and Uganda’s Salvado.
Daliso, a once Britain Got Talent finalist, recently also held a performance at Amaryllis Hotel in Blantyre.
“Honoured to have been invited to the State House by the President of Malawi. He said encouraging words about the power of art to inspire. I had a wonderful time,” he wrote on his social media page.
Chakwera has underscored the importance of the creative industry in the country’s development hence committing to support it.
