President Lazarus Chakwera Tuesday paid his last respect to two Malawi Defense Force (MDF) soldiers at Kamuzu College of Health Sciences in Blantyre— formerly College of Medicine— who died in a road accident on Monday.
According to acting MDF spokesperson Emmanuel Mlelemba, the remains of the two would be buried in Lilongwe where they were both residing.
He added that Corporal Sherif Maulana was expected to be buried Tuesday following the Muslim religion rites while Corporal Gift Kachedwa is expected to be buried today.
“It is a huge loss to us because these are soldiers who had a bright future in the MDF because they were very hardworking, courageous and disciplined soldiers, so we mourn their death,” he said.
The two soldiers were part of the presidential convoy when Chakwera was travelling to Blantyre from Lilongwe to officially commission Tedzani 4 Sower Station, among other engagements.
The convoy had almost finished its journey to Sanjika Palace when the Land Cruiser they were travelling in swerved off the road close to Grace Bandawe Conference Centre.
In an earlier interview, Minister of Information Gospel Kazako expressed sadness over the tragedy.
“President Lazarus Chakwera is saddened by the loss of the two soldiers because apart from being of great service to Malawi, he knew them by name and by face,” Kazako said.
