Lazarus Chakwera plans Malawi rebuilding conference

By Rebecca Chimjeka & Taonga Sabola:
President Lazarus Chakwera has said the country will hold a bilateral conference with all development partners and some civil society organisations in the next two weeks.
Chakwera said the conference is aimed at rebuilding the country.
He was speaking at Kamuzu International Airport in Lilongwe Tuesday on arrival from the United Kingdom (UK) where he attended the coronation of King Charles III and his wife Camila.
The Malawi leader described the trip as fruitful, saying apart from attending the coronation, he engaged key stakeholders from various sectors in discussions on trade and investment opportunities for Malawi.
“I held 19 bilateral meetings with multi-sectoral global leaders who would like to invest in Malawi and some who want to help in rebuilding the country after the Cyclone Freddy destruction.
“So in two weeks, the development partners are coming to Malawi to discuss with government on different sectors of development,” The President said.
He further announced that the trip opened up more discussions on Malawi’s economic growth and development in sectors such as agriculture, mining, tourism and manufacturing.
Chakwera said his attendance of the coronation demonstrated the solidarity and commitment that Malawi has for the King and the UK.
Meanwhile, the British High Commission is tomorrow expected to hold celebrations following the coronation.
British High Commissioner to Malawi Fiona Ritchie said Malawians will join millions around the world celebrating the event in streets, gardens, parks and community spaces.
Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Minister Nancy Tembo is expected to be guest of honour at the celebrations.
