Malawi Congress Party (MCP) president, Lazarus Chakwera, has promised people in the Northern Region that once voted into power, the party will improve the economic status of people in the region.
Chakwera said, among other sectors, MCP-led government would improve tourism and ensure that people in the region start benefitting from Nyika National Park, especially those from Rumphi, where it is located.
He was speaking during a whistle stop tour he had at Hewe, Mwazisi, Bolero and Rumphi Boma Sunday.
Chakwera said it was sad that people of Rumphi were languishing in poverty despite tourists bringing forex to the district’s tourism sites.
He said time had come for the government to construct hotels at Nyika National Park to create employment opportunities for the youth.
“The youth [here in Rumphi] remain poor as if the park does not receive tourists [who bring in forex]. In other countries, people from areas around parks are rich,” Chakwera said.
He said MCP would construct a university in Mzuzu to be named after Orton Chirwa.
Chakwera also said Mombera University would be constructed by MCP government and it would be named after Inkosi ya makosi M’mbelwa.
The MCP leader also pledged to improve the health and education sectors and well as prioritising the agricultural sector.
Chakwera said, if voted into power, MCP would construct Rumphi-Nyika and Njakwa- Livingstonia roads.
