Lazarus Chakwera responds to Gustave Kaliwo

Malawi Congress Party (MCP) President, Lazarus Chakwera, has responded to a letter the party’s Secretary General, Gustave Kaliwo, wrote to him on Tuesday.

In the letter, Kaliwo raised a number of issues, which he wanted Chakwera to act on, one of which is the call by some quarters of the party for an emergency convention to ratify changes made to the party’s National Executive Committee (Nec) last year.

But Chakwera says he cannot act on the issues raised.

“I have read the contents of your letter with keen interest. As you are aware, all the issues you are raising and asking us to act upon are live in courts. As such, I have been advised that commenting on issues that are not concluded in court is sub judice and prejudicial to the administration of justice. I am, therefore, constrained to respond and act on them before the court process is over to allow the rule of law to prevail,” reads Chakwera’s letter dated September 15, 2016.

MCP Deputy Secretary General, Eisenhower Mkaka, confirmed the authenticity of the letter but wondered how it had reached the public.

In the two-paged letter, Chakwera has expressed surprise why Kaliwo has not tabled the issues in Nec meetings.

“It is my hope that you will present them in the next Nec meeting after the courts have concluded the case,” reads the letter.

The case in which MCP chairmen dragged the party to court to force it to call an emergency convention was on Monday adjourned to October 1, 2016.
