President Lazarus Chakwera has hailed the Malawi National Football Team for starting the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers with a deserved 2-1 victory over Ethiopia at Bingu National Stadium Sunday.

Chakwera, who watched the game alongside Vice President Saulos Klaus Chilima, felt that the game and result united Malawians of different backgrounds.

“I join all Malawians in saluting the Flames for their momentous 2-1 victory over the Walias of Ethiopia today [Sunday], and for uniting us as a nation for the sake of our flag. What a great start to our campaign and what a joy it is to be Malawian,” Chakwera said in a statement.

During the match, Chakwera was seen interacting with Chilima while cheering The Flames on occasions.

Minister of Youth and Sports Richard Chimwendo Banda congratulated Chakwera for rallying behind the Flames.

“The President has demonstrated that he loves sports in general and Flames in particular. Together with the Vice President, they have showed that there is political will to support The Flames and sports in general,” he said.

Banda also hailed over 15 ministers and 35 members of Parliament for watching the game.

“This gives me confidence that when I lobby for support these ministers and MPs will be there to support such bills,” he said.
