Lazarus Chakwera supports Youth Manifesto

By Audrey Kapalamula:

Malawi Congress Party (MCP) president, Lazarus Chakwera, Thursday pledged to, once voted into power, support policies and strategies that would empower the youth in the country.

He made the pledge when he signed the Youth Manifesto in Lilongwe Thursday.

“I have realised that young people are crying for jobs. We are exporting jobs by creating investments that create jobs in countries where products come from. They are crying for participation in building the economy, and we have suggested how we can do that. People also want their space; their land which is being given to the highest bidder, making those who live here landless,” Chakwera said.

In the Youth Manifesto, young people demand 10 percent of total government business opportunities and 500 jobs per year, arguing that the country has the potential and resources to create decent jobs for young people.

The youth also want the next government to ensure that young people have access to pieces of land, end corruption and deal away with presidential immunity.

Youth and Society Executive Director, Charles Kajoloweka, said they were impressed with the commitments which leaders are making to implement points highlighted in the manifesto.
