President Lazarus Chakwera will on Sunday leave the country for London, the United Kingdom (UK), to attend the Global Education Summit, State House has announced.

State House Director of Communications and Executive Assistant to the President Sean Kampondeni said Chakwera has been invited to the summit by UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

“The President is going to participate in discussions on some of the things that need to be done across the partnerships that Malawi has with other countries to improve education standards across the board,” he said.

Kampondeni said Chakwera, who was recently installed as Champion for Higher Education in Africa, was keen to attend the summit.

Meanwhile, the State House has defended Chakwera’s decision to appoint his daughter, Violet, to serve at the Malawi’s embassy in Brussels, Belgium.

State House Press Officer Brian Banda said, since taking over the presidency last year, Chakwera has made more than 2,000 appointments out of which only one related to his daughter.

Banda added that Violet is qualified for the job.

He also backed Chakwera’s decision to keep under wraps recommendations of the report from the Special Taskforce on Operations of the Civil Service.

Banda insisted that the report had become one of the tools that Chakwera would use in governing the country.

“[As for] any decision that the President will make based on the recommendation drawn from that report; we will tell you,” he said

Vice President Saulos Chilima led the taskforce in reviewing functions of the Civil Service and presented the report to Chakwera in May this year.
