Leaders Civil cautious

By Mabvuto Kambuwe:

TNM Super League early pace-setters Civil Sporting Club have said they will not be carried away with their impressive start to the new season.

The Civil Servants ascended to the summit of the log table with six points after beating Karonga United 3-0 at Civo Stadium in Lilongwe on Saturday.

Civil are above second-placed Blue Eagles on goal difference.

Civil defeated Mlatho Mponela by the same margin in their opening game of the season at Kasungu Stadium.

But Civil assistant Coach, Oscar Kaunda, commended his players for their outstanding performance but cautioned that it was too early to start celebrating.

“It is good that we have collected maximum points from our first two games but we are not focusing on that achievement at the moment. Our aim is to keep the momentum in the league and hope to do something special this season,” Kaunda said.

Raphael Phiri, Isaac Msiska and Dan Kumwenda were on target for Civil in the Sunday match.

Karonga Coach, Dan Dzinkambani, blamed the loss on fatigue.

“We travelled a long distance and my players were a bit tired after playing another game on Saturday,” he said.

The lakeshore side defeated Mlatho Mponela 3-1 on Saturday at Kasungu Stadium.

In other games played over the weekend, Dwangwa United collected their first win in two games after beating Chitipa United 1-0 at Chitowe Stadium with Chifuniro Mpinganjira scoring the lone goal.

Mzuni shared the spoils with TN Stars in a match that ended 2-2 at Mzuzu Stadium. Collen Nkhulambe scored a brace for Mzuni whereas Stain Davie netted Stars’ two goals.

Curthbert Sinetre scored the lone goal of the match as Masters Security collected maximum points after beating rookies Ntopwa at Dedza Stadium on Sunday.

It was a fruitless trip to the Central Region for Ntopwa after also going down 1-0 to Blue Eagles the previous day.

Mlatho anchor the table without a point after playing two games whereas Stars and Ntopwa have a point each having also fulfilled two fixtures.

Giants Nyasa Big Bullets, Be Forward Wanderers and Silver Strikers were exempted from the weekend action after contributing more than three players to the Malawi national football team which travelled to eSwatini for a 2020 African Nations Championship first leg qualifier which ended 0-0.
