League gala set for January 26
By Williams Gondwa:
Super League of Malawi (Sulom) has separated teams’ awards ceremony from that of media practitioners who will be recognised for outstanding performance in the just-ended TNM Super League season.
Sulom General Secretary, Williams Banda, said the teams and players’ awards ceremony will take place on January 26 in Blantyre whereas the inaugural media awards event is scheduled for next month.
Banda said the change follows an agreement they reached with the league’s sponsor, TNM.
“When we were starting the second round, TNM felt that they should separate the two events. This followed concerns from Swam [Sports Writers Association-Malawi] on [the issue of] combining the two awards,” he said.
Under the new arrangement, Sulom and TNM made an arrangement that will see a panel of judges determining media award winners.
Banda said the media awards ceremony might take place between February 10 and 12 at a venue to be decided.
In individual awards, Nyasa Big Bullets hitman Chiukepo Msowoya is set to win the Golden Boot Award—his third in the Super League—after finishing the season with the most goals, 16.
Champions Bullets, Be Forward Wanderers, Silver Strikers and Masters Security are expected to receive team awards for making it into the top-four of the league.
Other awards include player of the season, best goalkeeper, best defender, best midfielder, most improved team and player.
The People’s Team won the league title with 71 points from 30 games.
