League table does not lie

The TNM Super League first-round wound up on Sunday with Be Forward Wanderers and Silver Strikers sharing the spoils after a goal-less draw at Bingu National Stadium.

Wanderers finished on top with 35 points, two points above second-placed Silver who are, so far, the only unbeaten side in the league.

The leaders won 11 games more than any other team followed by Silver (nine wins) and Nyasa Big Bullets with eight victories.

The Bankers and the Nomads conceded six goals each in 15 games. Silver scored 21 goals whereas the Nomads have netted 20 goals. Silver’s goal-difference is 15 against Wanderers’14.

Silver have drawn six games whereas Wanderers lost two games against Civil Sporting Club (2-0) and Bullets (1-0) and drew once.

Fifth-placed Civil Sporting Club scored the highest number of goals, 25. Out of 120 games, 269 goals were scored in the first-round.

Wanderers Coach, Yasin Osman, refused to get carried away.

Silver Team Manager, Francis Songo, said his side would come back stronger in the second-round.

“It is a good result for us considering that we have not lost a game in the first- round. It will be easy for us to polish few areas ahead of the second-round,” Songo said.

Although it is too early to predict the winner of the league championship, the top-three teams are favourites going into the second-round.

At this stage, it would be a grave mistake to rule out defending champions, Kamuzu Barracks (KB), who have finished the first-round on position eight with 21 points, 14 points behind Wanderers.

Last season, KB finished on a similar position but launched a serious title challenge to win the league with 61 points.

At the bottom, rookies Chitipa United, Dwangwa United and Blantyre United share a lot in common.

Chitipa anchor the table with 11 points, have won three games, drawn twice and lost 10 games, conceded 27 goals just like Dwangwa and BT United.
