Legislator presses for report on road carnage
Kasungu South East MP, Khumbize Kandodo Chiponda, has asked the government to come up with a comprehensive report on the causes of road accidents over the weekend that killed about 20 people across the country.
Chiponda said Members of Parliament (MPs) needed to know the main cause of such accidents and what the government was doing to put the situation under control.
In response, Minister of Transport and Public Works, Jappie Mhango, said his ministry is working on a ministerial statement on the matter after Leader of
Opposition in Parliament, Lazarus Chakwera, demanded it on Monday afternoon.
At least 20 people are said to have been killed in three separate road accidents between Saturday and Sunday.
Still in Parliament, Rumphi East MP, Kamlepo Kalua, nearly caused a stir as he demanded to know why some traditional chiefs were allowed in the chamber.
He alleged that some cabinet ministers were taking the chiefs into the House so that they castigate and insult opposition MPs on the state-run Malawi Broadcasting Corporation.
Mhango, who is also MP for Rumphi North, brought in chiefs, religious leaders and political leaders from his constituency.
Esther Mcheka Chilenje, First Deputy Speaker and MP for Nsanje North, also brought into the House over 30 chiefs, religious and political leaders.
Apart from the traditional, religious and political leaders, there were also learners from some schools in Kasungu who listened attentively as opposition parliamentarians took the government to task over its failure to resolve the ongoing strike by teachers which has crippled the education system in public schools.
Responding to the issue, Chilenje dismissed Kalua’s claims and business resumed on a good note as MPs asked cabinet ministers questions pertaining to their constituencies and national issues.
