Legislator vows to popularise isiZulu

By Pemphero Malimba:

Ntcheu North Constituency legislature Lymon Ziphondo has unveiled plans to extend his ‘Restoration of Ngoni Language and Culture’ initiative to young people in the district.

Speaking on Friday on the sidelines of a community meeting held in the area of Traditional Authority Njolomole, Ziphondo said he wanted to make sure that young people speak the language.

He said his plans are to extend the initiative to traditional Authorities Njolomole and Masasa.

“We are making headway and it is great that we are registering more and more learners especially in the area of Traditional Authority Chakhumbira wishing to learn the Ngoni culture and that includes language, dances and food,” Ziphondo said.

He further said their aim is to see young people from the age of four to 15 in the district growing in line with Ngoni culture by speaking isiZulu and being able to take part in Ngoni dances.

Ziphondo said, through the extension of the initiative, learners will be provided with a platform to be showcasing their skills at the Maseko Ngoni Festival.

“Once youngsters are able to dance to Ngoni traditional dances, we will be taking them to showcase their skills in ceremonies held in the community so that we may also encourage other young people to learn Ngoni culture,” he said.

Acting Inkosi Njolomole welcomed the move and pledged the community’s support towards the initiative.

“It’s very unfortunate to note that there are so many Ngoni people in the district but many do not speak the Ngoni language; they don’t understand their mother language (isiZulu). We are happy to hear that children in our area are taking interest in learning the culture and this is part of growing our culture which is losing its grip due to modern elements, “he said.

Since its inception in March last year, the initiative has so far seen over 200 youngsters learning the Ngoni language in the area of Traditional Authority Chakhumbira
