Lemekeza Phiri laid to rest

Seasoned sound engineer, producer and pianist Lemekeza Phiri was laid to rest at St Peters Cemetery in Area 3 in Lilongwe on Saturday.
Lemekeza died last Monday in India, where he went for medical treatment.
Several artists have mourned Lemekeza, describing his death as a huge blow to the creative sector.
His brother Jose said Lemekeza had passion for music and that he inspired many musicians in the country through his favourite jazz genre.
“He ignited the love of jazz in me and many other artists. I was proud of him as one of the finest musicians/ producers and sound engineers of our generation.
I miss him and may his soul rest in peace,” he said.
Lemekeza supported several festivals in the country through his expertise and this included Lake of Stars.
The artist, who owned Nyanja Studios which recorded music for several musicians, was part of Malingaka Band which had names such as saxophonist Dan Sibale, Sam Mjura Mkandawire and guitarist Ernest Ikwanga, who is based in Switzerland.
Lemekeza was also the band leader and keyboardist for the first Mibawa Band which had names such as Eunice Kadzuwa Mhango, JJ Kutsokwe and bassist Godfrey Mbidzi.
Born on June 5 1981, he is survived by a wife and two children. Lemekeza came from Senzani in Ntcheu District.
