Football Association of Malawi (Fam) General Secretary, Alfred Gunda, has said it would not be possible for Malawi National Football Team to play a friendly match against Lesotho next month.
Gunda said their counterparts have indicated that their national team would be engaged in Independence Celebrations activities next month.
“We are still looking at the possibility of securing some friendly matches especially on Fifa sanctioned dates. We requested Lesotho so that we can play against them in October but they have asked us to change the dates because they are engaged in other activities,” Gunda said.
The Fam GS was optimistic of having the match against Lesotho rescheduled to the weekend of November 11 and 12.
Fam also wrote to Rwanda, Mozambique and Liberia requesting for strength-testing matches in preparations for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
The Flames will play away to Morocco on March 27, 2018 before hosting the Indomitable Lions next September.
Malawi returned home yesterday from Morocco where they drew 1-1 against that country’s under-23 team and beat Togo 1-0.
The Flames are second in Group A of the Afcon qualifiers with three points and are disadvantaged as only one team will qualify from the group.
Cameroon already qualified for the 2019 Afcon finals by virtue of being hosts, which means Morocco, the Flames and Comoros Islands will fight for the remaining slot.
