Let MPs represent Malawians—Chakwera

Malawi Congress Party (MCP) and Tonse Alliance presidential candidate Lazarus Chakwera Thursday said as Parliament convenes today in Lilongwe, he hopes the legislators will serve their functions and priotise matters that are of national interest.

Speaking after a campaign rally at Mayani ground in Dedza, Chakwera expressed hope that the Members of Parliament will come up with the date for fresh presidential election.

“They [MPs] should consider the things that concern Malawians most. In regards to the election date I am sure they will do their job,” he said.

In his address during the rally, Chakwera said he wants politics that will improve the livelihood of people.

“We want to deal away with the habit of getting loans from outside the country for our development. Schools are failing to improve. We want to see change. Corruption has claimed lives of many people in the country,” he said.

He condemned the spirit of attacking the judiciary, stressing that he wants a nation that upholds the rule of law.

Chakwera further said the Tonse Alliance believes in providing affordable fertiliser to farmers, loans to women and youth will alleviate poverty that has stricken many in the country.

Speaking in Traditional Authority (T/A) Kaphuka’s area, UTM regional governor for Central Region Samson Mithenga asked people in the area to come out in large numbers and vote for Chakwera.

He said whether one likes it or not, the country will go to polls.

Before holding a mass rally at Mayani ground, Chakwera who was in company of several MPs and Lilongwe City Mayor Juliana Kaduya conducted whistle stops in the district.
