The second edition of Cape Maclear Triathlon gets underway Rugby today in Mangochi District with athletes set to test their versatility in the multi-discipline sports event.
The two-day event, to involve 153 athletes, is about extracting the power of sports to empower the underprivileged. Proceeds from the TNM-sponsored race will go towards charity.
In view of this, Sports and Culture Minister, Grace Chiumia, has hailed the mobile phone company for contributing to the development of triathlon. TNM has injected K11 million in the race.
“My ministry really appreciates the role that TNM is rendering towards the development of triathlon which is regarded as a minor sport in the country. I urge other companies to emulate TNM’s gesture,” Chiumia said in a statement.
Event Manager, Jam Kaunda, of Mizu Foundation said all was set for the event which has attracted participants from sporting disciplines such as a 2km Thumbi Island swim, cycling, volleyball, football, swimming and rowing.
TNM Public Relations and Sponsorship Manager, Limbani Nsapato, said by sponsoring the triathlon, they hope to help raise the profile of minor sports and promote tourism in Malawi.
