Renowned fashion designer Lilly Alfonso will participate at the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in Kigali, Rwanda.

Alfonso said Sunday that her interest was not only exhibiting her designs at the fashion summit but rather to interact with young people and implore them to believe in themselves.

“This is all part of the 100 Year Plan that is aimed at changing and propelling African fashion. For me to be where I am today it has been hard work and learning from others and so, I want to tell my story to young people and inspire them to do more,” Alfonso said.

She said she has patronised several international platforms where she has shared her fashion story but now she wants to engage young people because they “are the people that will help change the future”.

“We need to be there for these young people and encourage them to stay focused and utilise their talents,” Alfonso said.

In March this year, Alfonso also raised the country’s flag at the Africa 4 Africa Women’s Conference in Zanzibar, Tanzania.

The conference came in timely as the world commemorated the International Women’s Day.

“I always look at the bigger picture and the idea for me is to use fashion to change people’s mindsets,” she said.

Recently, the Lilongwe-based fashion designer also called on fellow designers in the country to continue being resourceful, artistic and original in order to grow the industry.

She observed that for a long time many designers have not had a chance to explore and get exposure.
