Lilongwe academy strikes deal with Sundowns

By Mabvuto Kambuwe:

Lilongwe-based Ascent Football Academy has entered into a partnership with South African giants Mamelodi Sundowns Academy.

The partnership would see Ascent, formerly of Chigoli, sending at least two players to the Pretoria team later this year on a training programme.

Ascent Founder, George Maguire, who travelled to South Africa to strike the deal, confirmed the partnership yesterday.

“Overtime, Ascent shall send two or four players, both male and female, on training placements. We look forward to working together in future. It was great spending time, learning about the club and their philosophy with the academy’s Director Shawn Bishop,” Maguire said.

Sundowns spokesperson, Thulani Thuswa, Wednesday asked for more time to confirm the agreement with Ascent.

Flames forward Robin Ngalande also graduated from Sundowns Academy.

Ascent sent Zobran Elias to the United States on a football scholarship.

Ascent Coach, Thom Mkolongo, said the partnership with Sundowns would inspire youngsters at the Lilongwe facility to work hard.

“We have a good group of talented players and we believe that they would be motivated to work hard because there are more opportunities outside the country. We will continue producing good players capable of doing well on the international stage,” Mkolongo said.

Recently, Ascent conducted a talent identification exercise in Zomba and Blantyre where 11 players were selected.

The Lilongwe-based academy contributed three players to Malawi under-17 national team which took part in the Cosafa Youth Championship in Mauritius.
