Lilongwe basketball team Zimbabwe-bound

Lilongwe-based basketball clubs, Brave Hearts (men’s and ladies) have been invited to a three-day tournament in Harare, Zimbabwe this weekend.

A delegation of 29 players plus officials is expected to leave today for the third edition of Vixens Annual Invitational Tournament throwing off today at Doom Belvadare Teachers Training College.

Brave Hearts Patron, Griffin Kalua, said the team was in good spirits ahead of the tournament.

“We are going there to compete and the players are raring to go. We want to give our teams, international exposure as we aim to take basketball to another level,” Kalua said.

Basketball Association of Malawi (Basmal) Technical Director, Khama Mphepo, hailed G.Y Imports and Exports for sponsoring the trip.

“International tournaments help our players to gain exposure and experience. We are always grateful to G.Y Imports and Exports for taking the sport to another level,” he said.

Teams from Zambia, Botswana, South Africa and the host nation are expected to participate in the tournament that will attract 16 men’s and 16 women’s teams.

“The affiliation fee for the tournament is K29,160 (US$40) for local teams and K72, 900 (US$100) for international teams and this is payable before the commencement of the games. There might be prize money for the eventual winners. We are still negotiating with potential sponsors,” reads part of the letter from the tournament’s organisers.

Brave Hearts also participated in tournaments in Zambia and Tanzania.
