Lilongwe businessman faces murder charges

Well-known Lilongwe businessperson, Mark William Phiri, is expected to answer murder charges after the death of his wife Waheeda Bagus who succumbed to bullet wounds.
Bagus, who was allegedly shot by her husband on December 15 2019 in Lilongwe, died on Wednesday.
She was admitted to Kamuzu Central Hospital where she breathed her last.
Lingadzi Police Public Relations Officer, Salomy Zgambo, confirmed the death.
“I can confirm that Waheeda Bagus, who was allegedly shot by her husband, has died and the husband is likely to answer murder charges,” Zgambo said.
She said the suspect attempted to bribe police officers on duty to cover up the story in which the officers forcefully placed him in custody.
The suspect is said to have produced a gun, but the officers had to shoot in the air to scare him and they snatched the gun from him.
Phiri who was arrested on December 15 2019 on charges of acts intended to cause grievous harm, will now appear in court on January 17 2020where he is likely to answer murder charges.
Bagus 25, hailed from Sekani Village, Traditional Authority Ngabu, Chikwawa District, while the husband is from Msulilongwe Village in Lilongwe.
