The idea for Lilongwe-based couple of Chris and Jochebed Mpanga to participate in the 2016 Illovo Golf Tournament at Kasasa Golf Club in Nkhotakota District on Saturday paid dividends as the duo grabbed the championship.
The husband amassed 30 points while the wife chalked 20 points to emerge the winners.
Jochebed said the win was an encouragement to their golf careers.
“I started playing golf sometime back but it was my first time to participate in this competition. My wife started last year but I am equally surprised at how fast she is adapting to the game. We support each other and it is no surprise that we managed to grab the championship. We have been encouraged and we will try our best that we should defend the title next year,” Mpanga said.
Illovo Dwangwa’s General Manager, Lal Bachan, expressed satisfaction with the results which saw another couple of Smith and Lusayo Sibale being runners-up while Daniel and Ruth Mvula finished on third position.
“This tournament is held annually, and we are happy to host a successful tournament one again. This year it has been special because we are celebrating 50 years of sugar production in Malawi and the same year our company is rebranding. So this also gave us an opportunity to interact with our customers and other service providers we work with to share with them our experiences,” Bachan said.
The champions received a K200, 000 Game Stores’ voucher, a trophy, an umbrella and 20 kilogrammes of sugar bales each, while the runners-up got K150, 000 voucher, a trophy, an umbrella and 10 kilogrammes of sugar bales each.
Third-placed couple got K100, 000 voucher, a trophy, an umbrella and five kilogrammes of sugar bales each.
In other categories, Sandra Komackech won the ladies’ longest drive, while Cosmas Mweniwawo got the championship in the men’s category.
Audra Bester was the ladies’ nearest-to-the-pin winner while Felix Mlenga topped the men’s category.
