Lilongwe hosts sports festival
Athletes from Lilongwe secondary and primary schools took part in various sports disciplines over the weekend.
The athletes, drawn from five schools, competed in sports codes such as netball, football and chess at Chisapo Parish Ground.
Best athletes received prizes such as learning materials and money.
Lilongwe Urban Sports Development Officer, Grace Thera-Chirambo, said they hosted the festival to keep the youth busy.
“An idle mind is the devil’s workshop. So we believe that sports help to keep the youth active and away from bad behaviour. We are glad that the young athletes showcased their skills and entertained the crowd,” Thera-Chirambo said.
Chisapo Zone Chairperson, Wezzie Moyo, said sports play a crucial role in developing the youth.
“The games have gone well and we think that the athletes enjoyed the games. Our aim is to take sports to the next level in the country through sports festivals,” Moyo said.
