Lilongwe City Council Mayor, Desmond Bikoko, has joined the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) in what he calls a personal developmental agenda to partner the government in developing the city.

“As the Mayor of Lilongwe City, I understand that true patriots must join hands to achieve development. That is why I have decided to join the DPP so that I can work hand in hand with the government towards a better Malawi,” Bikoko said.

He said people should understand that he has not joined the DPP because of any personal vendetta; rather, he has joined it to make sure that he works with the government to overcome the various challenges that both the government and the city are facing.

“I feel like the council’s projects will be easily carried out if I work with the government. There are many projects that are being carried out in the city, mainly the road projects, which are DPP-facilitated,” he said.

He further said people should not mistake his joining DPP as a move motivated by greed or because he has been frustrated by Malawi Congress Party on whose ticked he was voted into office.

“I am a successful businessman, and I would like to align myself with successful people in the country. That is where the DPP comes in, since it is a successful party,” he said.

In his welcome remarks to the new party members, DPP vice-president for the Central Region, Hetherwick Ntaba, said the party was open to new members.

“We, as a party, are happy that we have new members who have joined the DPP. This simply shows that people are able to see the good works that the party, under the leadership of the State President Peter Mutharika, is doing,” Ntaba said.

Another notable figure who has joined the DPP is Fahad Assani, formerly of the People’s Party.
