Lilongwe poetry feast on
Poetry has been there for ages. To ordinary minds, this means there is nothing to add or subtract from the genre.
But there are people who believe that, riding on the wings of poetry— which needs no ‘new’ endorsement— they can record their own journey in the creative industry and add their own story to the established story of poetry.
So, urged on by this force of belief in poetry’s recreation powers, some poets are set to ride on poetry’s wings on Sunday, July 9. The setting is no other than Sheaffer ICA Marque in Lilongwe, where poets will celebrate poetry’s enduring power at an event dubbed ‘Mlakatuli Feast’.
Speaking in an interview, organiser of the event, Channel for all Nations radio and television ‘Mlakatuli’ programme host, Chris Loka, said the organisers have learned from last year’s experience that only proper planning produces success.
Last year, what promised to be a great party disappeared into nothing, really, as, despite making deafening noise prior to the event, no poet turned up because there, simply, was no poetry feast.
But Loka said there is no room for false hopes this year.
“This is a big event that we host each and every year, only that last year it failed due to other challenges beyond our control. We are back in full force and people should expect nothing but the best poetry feast,” Loka said
Loka added that organisers would continue to give budding poets the platform to showcase their talent.
“As Christians, we would like to motivate and encourage poets to use their talent in spreading the word of God,” Loka said.
He said poets such as Raphael Sitima, Samuel Joseph, Joseph Madzedze, Hudson Chamasowa, Yohane Kachere, Kenneth Khondiwa, Mlakatuli Wachibwibwi and Mlakatuli Thomas have confirmed their availability.
The list will also include Atcheya, Mr Malawi, Aunt Gate and Mr India while Madalitso Band is set to entertain patrons through music.
