Lilongwe vendors get cement, iron sheets

Almost a month after fire destroyed Lilongwe Central Market, about 6,000 vendors who were affected by the inferno continue getting assistance from well-wishers.

On Wednesday Lilongwe Asian Business Community (LABC) handed over 600 bags of cement and 3,000 iron sheets worth about K15 million, to be used in rebuilding the market.

This follows a promise the association made after the inferno.

The association’s leader, Yusuf Abubaker said they thought of helping the vendors, after learning about the accident.

“We know how painful it is for people to lose business. We promised to help. It therefore gives us a sense of pride that our aid will help our fellow brothers in returning to business. It was a massive task of raising the money. We are happy that we have honoured our promise,” Abubaker said.

Secretary for Lilongwe Central Market, Daniel Kamara said they will discuss how best they will use the donation.

“We know it may be difficult to share what has been donated. We will just find a project that we will all benefit from,” Kamara said.

Director of Commerce at Lilongwe City Council, Genscher M’bwabwa, thanked the association for the support they have given the vendors. He said it is in line with the conditions the vendors have been given for rebuilding the market.
