CHIKUNI— It would require over K1 billion

Lilongwe Water Board (LWB) has unveiled plans to construct a sediment trap in a bid to improve water supply in the city.

The board intends to invest over K1 billion in the project.

The board’s operations have been affected due to siltation and debris at its intake points.

LWB Chief Executive Officer, Alfonso Chikuni, said customers have been subjected to sporadic water supply due to siltation and debris.

“Now we would like to install a sediment trap but it would require over K1 billion to put up such a structure,” Chikuni said.

The board has capacity to produce over 125,000 cubic meters for supply to its catchment area a day.

However, the board is only able to supply between 90,000 to 100,000 cubic meters a day against demand for 130,000 cubic meters.
