Lilongwe women convicted for assault
Nkukula Second Grade Magistrate Court in Lumbadzi, Lilongwe, on Wednesday convicted three women who are being accused of stripping and severely assaulting a 30-year-old woman in Lilongwe.
Kanengo Police spokesperson, Laban Makalani, has said the three women had appeared before the court for the State to tender medical documents of the victim.
“Following the conviction, the State applied to the court to transfer the cases to Lilongwe Senior Resident Magistrate Court for sentencing due to the gravity of the maximum penalty attached to the first count,” Makalani said.
The first count, which is acts intended to cause grievous harm, attracts a maximum penalty of life imprisonment while the second count, which is of insulting the modesty of a woman, attracts a maximum penalty of one-year imprisonment.
According to Makalani, following the application, Second Grade Magistrate Ezekiel Kantikana, who is mandated to pass a prison sentence that does not exceed 10 years, has transferred the case to the Lilongwe Senior Resident Magistrate Court for sentencing, at a date to be announced.
The three convicts— Thokozani Msiska, Zelifa Phiri and Rodnes Chisale— were arrested following a complaint the victim lodged at Kenengo Police Station.
Makalani said the victim complained that she had been harassed for eight hours.
“On Friday, 20th October, Kanengo Police Station lodged an investigation into ponographic materials which went viral on social media depicting a syndicate of women stripping the victim naked and severely assaulting her,” Makalani said.
The three convicts are on remand at Maula Prison awaiting sentence.
