Limbani Masamba, Chikondi Makawa in drub stalemate

Prominent boxers Limbani Masamba and Chikondi Makawa failed to deliver a master-class performance as promised when they settled for a draw in an eight-round non-title contest at Motel Paradise in Blantyre on Sunday.

The third meeting of the two fighters did not live up to its billing as they rarely exchanged hard punches.

At times, it appeared to be more of a contact sparring session.

Masamba and Makawa used a Blantyre Youth Centre-tailored orthodox style which meant that it was going to be tough to outwit each other.

It was therefore not surprising that the judges declared the contest a draw.

Masamba said his opponent was well prepared for the fight.

“I tried my best to win and I cornered him on several occasions but he was able to take my blows. It was not a sparring session as such. We were just cautious,” he said.

Makawa called for a rematch, saying he would vie for a knockout in the next fight.

“I believe my performance was outstanding. I should have won this bout on points. I want another fight so I can finish him off with a knockout,” he said.

Following the draw, Masamba has 13 wins including six knockouts, a draw and 12 defeats whereas Makawa has 14 wins, nine defeats and three draws.

During supporting fights, Patson Ledson defeated Mphatso Matabwa in the lightweight category whereas Lyton Kabulika knocked out Chimwemwe Goliati in a junior welterweight contest.

Besao Boxing Promotions organised the fight with K1 million support from FDH Bank.
