Renowned boxers Chikondi ‘Mtengo-wa-Minga’ Makawa and Limbani ‘The Lion’ Masamba are set to entertain boxing lovers with their skills in the ring as they trade punches at Motel Paradise in Blantyre Sunday.
The two face off in an eight-round non-title lightweight bout organised by Besao Boxing Promotions.
FDH Bank set the stage for the fight with a sponsorship of K1 million to announce the return of Besao and Motel Paradise to the game after missing out for several years.
This is the third time for Makawa and Masamba to fight after their encounters in 2015 and 2017, both at M1 Centrepoint in Lilongwe.
Masamba won the first fight while Makawa triumphed in the second and last encounter.
Makawa said he had trained hard at his Liwonde base in readiness for the fight as he wants to re-affirm his status as a top boxer.
“To me, this is a Southern Region derby. We come from the same region and there is a lot at stake. I am training hard to come out victorious. Having fought against Masamba on two occasions, I know what to expect,” he said.
Blantyre-based Masamba said he was ready to face Makawa, describing him as a familiar opponent.
“This is a Blantyre vs Liwonde bout. I will be fighting at home and it will not be on for me to lose. I have been working hard in training and I am in great shape,” he said.
Besao Director, Bester Saopa, said he chose the two boxers for the bout because of their reputation.
“Makawa and Masamba are two of the biggest names in Malawi boxing. They have also represented the country at international bouts on several occasions. We have also lined up several supporting bouts to set the stage. Boxing lovers should expect family entertainment,” he said.
FDH Bank Head of Marketing, Levi Nkunika, said they were proud to be associated with boxing, which is one of the games that entertain Malawians.
