Prominent boxers Chikondi ‘Mtengo-wa- Minga’ Makawa and Limbani ‘The Lion’ Masamba are finalising their preparations ahead of their fight at Motel Paradise in Blantyre on Sunday.
The two will trade punches in an eight-round non-title lightweight bout organised by Besao Boxing Promotions.
The showdown is being sponsored by several firms including FDH Bank who donated K1 million during a ceremony held at Blantyre Youth Centre on Friday.
This will be the third time for Makawa and Masamba to fight after their encounters in 2015 and 2017, both at M1 Centrepoint in Lilongwe.
Masamba won the first fight while Makawa triumphed in the pair’s last meeting.
Makawa said he was training hard at his Liwonde base in readiness for the fight as he wants to reaffirm his status as a top boxer.
“To me, this is a Southern Region derby. We come from the same region and there is a lot at stake. I am training hard to come out victorious. Having fought against Masamba on two occasions, I know what to expect,” he said.
The Blantyre-based Masamba said he was ready to face Makawa who he described as a familiar opponent.
“This is a Blantyre vs Liwonde bout. I will be fighting at home and it will not be on for me to lose. I have been working hard in training and I am in great shape,” he said.
Besao Director, Bester Saopa, said he chose the two boxers for the bout because of their reputation.
“Makawa and Masamba are two of the biggest names in Malawi boxing. They have also represented the country at international bouts on several occasions. We have also lined up several supporting bouts to set the stage. Boxing lovers should expect family entertainment,” he said.
The bout will mark the return of Besao as a promoter and Motel Paradise as a venue after both missed out on the game for several years.
