The mighty has fallen. Pugilist Kudakwache Nkhakami la-Banda suffered his first defeat in the professional ranks when he was knocked out by Limbani Masamba in an eight-round welterweight non-title bout at M1 Centrepoint in Lilongwe on Sunday.
Kudakwache, who was undefeated in 12 consecutive professional fights, was tormented by Masamba, who got his tactics right on several occasions.
Finally, the record came to a sad end as Masamba’s right hook left Kudakwache helpless on the floor.
Kudakwache was unconscious and needed first aid attention. He spent almost 10 minutes on the treatment table inside the ring.
His faithful were silent, fearing for the worst. And they could not believe what they were seeing on that hot afternoon.
Simply, Masamba was too good and dominated the bout from the word go.
In his victory speech, Masamba was pleased with his performance.
“I thank God for helping me to win this bout. I had good preparations and it was a good fight for me,” he said.
Kudakwache, through his manager, Mike Chimaliza, admitted it was not his day.
“Masamba was better and Kudakwache struggled. But not all is lost. I hope that he will come back stronger,” Chimaliza said.
In the main supporting bout, Israel Kammwamba won against Yobe Kanyunya through retirement.
