Limbani wins super welterweight belt
Malawi’s former welterweight champion Limbani Masamba announced his return to form when he won the super welterweight title after defeating Ernest Msoliza on unanimous decision at Robins Park in Blantyre on Saturday.
It was an evenly contested 12 round fight which could have gone either way but Limbani battled bravery to overcome an equally impressive boxer.
Judges scored 118-113, 118-112 and 117-110 in favour of Limbani Masamba.
The first two rounds saw both boxers sizing each with cautious movements and jabs.
Limbani in search of victory kept chasing Msoliza who impressed with his ducking and blocking skills.
However, the early rounds saw Limbani scoring points with his left jab.
The middle rounds belonged to Msoliza, who despite retreating most of the times, unleashed his jabs and hooks to trying to catch Limbani offguard.
In the ninth round Limbani sustained a cut under his chin but he withstood pressure to release flurry of punches to enhance his credentials to win the title.
Limbani came strongly in the last two rounds and he knocked down Msoliza but the challenger despite sustaining a cut above his right eyelid managed to beat the count.
In the last round Msoliza who despite being on danger was still ruthless was saved by the canvas.
The final whistle saw Limbani hunting for a knockout as Msoliza ducked professionally.
