Limbe Leaf awards farmers
Limbe Leaf Tobacco Company recently recognised farmers that performed well in the just ended tobacco season.
The awards were for exceptional performance in categories of all types of tobacco—Flue-Cured, Virginia and Dark-Fired tobacco.
Farmers that did well in the various categories were each awarded five bags of fertiliser, a bicycle, 24 iron sheets and roofing nails.
Limbe Leaf awarded farmers who complied with extension services and met standards required by customers.
“We believe this gesture will motivate the farmers to work harder so that they can be rewarded again in future,” Limbe Leaf Managing Director, Don Mac Alpine, said.
Speaking on behalf of the farmers, Chisomo Paizoni thanked Limbe Leaf for the gesture and said the awards would strengthen the relationship between the company and the growers.
In addition, Paizoni said the awards would motivate a lot of growers to meet required standards.
“I am among farmer s who have benefitted from the Integrated Production System (IPS),” he said.
Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Agriculture, Gray Nyandule-Phiri, commended Limbe Leaf for the awards, saying they are an encouragement to the recipients as well as other farmers to always aim for high standards.
“Government will support programmes that lead to the development of the country and IPS is one such programme. The importance of tobacco to the country’s economy cannot be underestimated,” Phiri said.
